DetailsAvahi is a great LGPL alternative to howl and it's implementation is more up to date as well.
It has gtk and qt3 and qt4 support. Some features to come are DNSSEC and wide area support. http://freedesktop.org/Software/Avahi |

Reason for closing: Won't implement
Additional comments about closing: Howl will get removed for mdnsresponder, since both KDE and GNOME can use that. Avahi is not implemented at all in GNOME, so it is useless at this moment.
