Description:
cairo 1.12.6-2 produces a black background in the Activities overview in gnome-shell 3.6.1
Rolling back to cairo 1.12.2-3 fixes the problem. Package for cairo 1.12.4-x was not available to test.

Additional info:
* package version(s)
cairo 1.12.6-2
* config and/or log files etc.

Steps to reproduce:
Install the package from the /extra repository with pacman. Re-launching gnome-shell with Alt-F2-r has no initial impact.
Next reboot there will be a back background instead of the Gnome wallpaper when you enter Activities view.

Please provide logs, infos about your gfx card and used acceleration method, used gtk3 theme. And then look out for similar reports upstream in the gnome and cairo resources.

i think is a cairo bug. it was moved too early and only lasted in testing ~4hours.

This issue was present since cairo 1.12.6 update in testing for ~10days and may be even caused by the former 1.12.4 that never went to extra.

Nothing stands out in Xorg.0.log or journalctl at the time of failure. I'm rather new to Arch/systemd/journalctl. Have installed and enabled the syslog-ng.service.
Any log in particular I should be heading for?

Performed a clean install yesterday. Have (since last update) gnome-shell 3.6.1, with default Adwaita theme and custom background. Reverting to the default Adwaita background has no effect (tried Alt-F2-r and reboot).
GPU is AMD Radeon HD 6450.
I'm using the proprietary AMD (Catalyst) fglrx driver, packages catalyst-dkms catalyst-utils installed from the official repo.

Please try the open source ati driver.

I can't reproduce this with xf86-video-intel, so a change in cairo triggered some weird behaviour with your binary blob driver.

You could try to find the upstream commit that causes your problem by bisecting cairo.

Installed the xf86-video-ati driver and the latest cairo package. I can no longer reproduce the bug and things are working normally.
(Apart from the fact the card runs about 20 degrees Celsius hotter with the open source driver but that's another issue altogether ;-) )

I guess it's very safe to say it has to do with the proprietary driver indeed.
Will have a closer look at the latest cairo commits.

The AMD/ATI pages on the wiki suggest the open source ati driver should be the first choice anyway, so fair enough.

I've opened a bug report with cairo to follow this up.
