The icon of liferea isn't shown in the message bar in gnome 3.6. But you can click the empty field and control liferea

The icon work fine here on fvwm with trayer as the system tray. Probably a Gnome issue.

Do you have a gnome shell theme installed? tried to see if its reproducable with the default one?
