vlc has a hard dependency on ttf-freefont as default subtitle fonts I suppose. Yet, vlc subtitle font default has been Dejavu Sans for a long time now. It would be more useful to depend on ttf-dejavu or make ttf-dejavu an optdepend.

On a related note, I see these two lines in the PKGBUILD for VLC:

sed -i -e 's:truetype/freefont:TTF:g' modules/text_renderer/freetype.c
sed -i -e 's:truetype/ttf-dejavu:TTF:g' modules/visualization/projectm.cpp

How do they affect the fonts for VLC and are they necessary?

I had not noticed that. With the editings in the build() section of the PKGBUILD (thanks to whoever did that), vlc doesn't need to depend on freefont (not even Deja Vu). Maybe make ttf-freefont an optdepend and rather a depend of the themes package as it is needed at least by one skin there?
