Also, I'm attempting to start it under awesome with no particularly strange configuration, I'm using systemd as well, granted neither of these things should have much or any effect.

The least you could do for a bug you've marked as "critical" is post the actual error.

Could not find this bug upstream. Please consider reporting it to the ibus developers at: http://code.google.com/p/ibus/issues/list
