Same problem here. Just upgraded to gnome from testing.

gnome-theme-manager quits with an error:

"The default theme schemas could not be found on your system. This means that you probably don't have metacity installed, or that your gconf is configured incorrectly."

After digging around I found the /schemas/desktop/gnome/interface path is missing in gconf.

Tryed to install the schema file manually but got an error:
$ GCONF_CONFIG_SOURCE=`/opt/gnome/bin/gconftool-2 --get-default-source` /opt/gnome/bin/gconftool-2 --makefile-install-rule /opt/gnome/etc/gconf/schemas/desktop_gnome_interface.schemas
Resolved address "xml::/opt/gnome/etc/gconf/gconf.xml.defaults" to a writable configuration source at position 0
/opt/gnome/etc/gconf/schemas/desktop_gnome_interface.schemas:7070: parser error : internal error
• gnome-vfs • gtk+.</long>
^
/opt/gnome/etc/gconf/schemas/desktop_gnome_interface.schemas:7070: parser error : Extra content at the end of the document
• gnome-vfs • gtk+.</long>

$ pacman -Qo /opt/gnome/etc/gconf/schemas/desktop_gnome_interface.schemas
/opt/gnome/etc/gconf/schemas/desktop_gnome_interface.schemas is owned by libgnome 2.12.0-1

Oh, and I think there is another issue in libgnome.install:
[...]
GCONF_CONFIG_SOURCE=`opt/gnome/bin/gconftool-2 --get-default-source` ...

gconftool-2 is referenced by an relative path. The root slash is missing.

Ah, thanks for finding out. I hit this one also this morning.
Why you're having problems with icons: I think you're missing a theme. Did you do a reinstall of your system while keeping your /home? I did yesterday, which resulted in white paper icons: I use gorilla icons, which are in the gnome-themes-extras package, which was not installed on my new install. Pacman -S'ing this package resulted in instant icon display (gamin does its job :))
