Go here and download the manual of the S60 Canon camera:

Open it with the current Evince on Arch Linux and it shows a big "COPY" watermark and it doesn't let you READ the actual PDF underneath it. xPDF reads the pdf file correctly instead, the watermark must be read as an alpha blended image.

Please upload the PDF file as attachment, as I can't find the manual on the canon website. The URL you supplied in the bugreport comes up with a timed-out session.

Unfortunately the file is too big, 3.5 MBs. I will have to guide you on how to download it:
Go here: http://consumer.usa.canon.com/ir/controller?act=DownloadDetailAct&fcategoryid=322&modelid=10149
and then click on the "Product / Software Manuals" link. A new window will popup and from there download the "PowerShot S60 Camera User Guide (PDF, 3.45 MB)" and open it with Evince (move down a few pages to see that a huge watermark renders on top of the text making it unreadable) and then with XPDF to see the difference in rendering.

Ah, it was even visible in the thumbnail generated by the evince nautilus plugin. It's a bug in poppler, I'll look for a fix in CVS or submit the bugreport upstream at Freedesktop.org

Seems this bug also affects gpdf, which makes me think that it has recently been fixed in xpdf 3.0.1, since gpdf and poppler are both forks from 3.0.

This should be fixed with evince 0.5 and poppler 0.5.0 people have been flagging all over the place, but those releases are development releases, which break API with other programs that utilize poppler.

this is still an issues with poppler 0.5.X
Comment by Jan de Groot (JGC) - Sunday, 26 March 2006, 12:44 GMT
poppler 0.5.x supports transparency, but the cairo backend in poppler doesn't. This will get fixed soon in the 0.5 branch, expect the next release of 0.5.x to have it.
