Description:
In a video call, I can see the incoming video clearly; but my outgoing video is very dark. I have documented the setup of my Ricoh webcam at http://intosimple.blogspot.co.uk/2012/07/webcam-on-dell-latitude-e6520-on-arch.html My device is 05ca:181c When I run skype using the following:

LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib32/libv4l/v4l1compat.so skype

I get the following errors:

ERROR: ld.so: object '/usr/lib32/libv4l/v4l1compat.so' from LD_PRELOAD cannot be preloaded: ignored.
libv4l2: error dequeuing buf: Invalid argument

Additional info:
* package version(s): skype 4.0.0.8-3, lib32-v4l-utils 0.8.8-1, v4l-utils 0.8.8-1

Is this bug report mainly about the video being dark or about the LD_PRELOAD error?
Does /usr/lib32/libv4l/v4l1compat.so exist?
Comment by Amitav (amitavmohanty01) - Saturday, 08 September 2012, 05:25 GMT
Yes, /usr/lib32/libv4l/v4l1compat.so exists.

My issue is the video being dark and I thought the preload error might be related.

skype 4.0.0.8-3 automatically preloads v4l2convert.so if it exists. Please run bash -x /usr/bin/skype and check if it exports LD_PRELOAD. If you want to test skype without preloading run /usr/lib/skype/skype directly. Loading v4l1compat.so should not have any effect.

Ah, well I did not know that. I guess we need to add this piece of information to the wiki. Well, I had tested the device earlier and it was working fine; but now the video is dark and I don't know why.

By the way, even I start skype without the LD_PRELOAD line, I am getting the following error.

libv4l2: error dequeuing buf: Invalid argument

Please report the libv4l2 error as a separate bug, so that it can be assigned cleanly to the v4l-utils maintainers. Thanks.

Still a problem?
Comment by Amitav (amitavmohanty01) - Thursday, 22 November 2012, 06:00 GMT
Yes, this problem persists. With latest skype, I did a video call and again the video was dark.

Have you tried going into Skype options, video devices, and enabling auto-exposure?
