When upgrading openldap, the initscript is updated, which is fine, but the only way to start openldap using secure mode (that I'm aware of) is by editing the initscript to set the start command to: `/usr/sbin/slapd -h ldaps:///` versus just `/usr/sbin/slapd`.

Can this be moved into a variable and placed in conf.d/slapd? That way when an upgrade happens the initscript does not need to be edited. Or is there a better way?

Sure, this needs to be configured with a conf.d file. Debian uses /etc/default/slapd for this. I used it the last few days on a few production machines, and I think the two most useful are these:

SLAPD_SERVICES (they feed that to -h if set)
SLAPD_OPTIONS
