I have no idea where to put this file, but the face image method as stated in that documentation has been removed long time ago when GNOME 3.0 was released. You can select a different account image using the accounts panel in gnome-control-center, gdm should take the image set there.

Sorry, it works perfectly, but it needs a computer to be restarted. Thanks, please close this.

I was happy prematurely, it works only for the first time after reboot, then it tends to get back to grey icons. (Even when the gnome-control-center method is used.)

You could ask the GNOME devs if it's still supported, quote from there website:

" For further information about GDM, refer to the project website at http://www.gnome.org/projects/gdm and the project Wiki http://live.gnome.org/GDM.

For discussion or queries about GDM, refer to the
<gdm-list@gnome.org>
mail list. This list is archived, and is a good resource to check to seek answers to common questions. This list is archived at http://mail.gnome.org/archives/gdm-list/ and has a search facility to look for messages with keywords. "

Did you contact upstream?

No. Maybe I will downgrade to GDM 2.20. I consider this quite a pity, quite a shame, not being able to use a personalized Linux login manager in 2012—all the more compared to 2001's Windows XP.

Why didn't you ask the gnome devs about it or how you can debug this issue? Downgrading isn't a solution
