Details

1) In the HOSTNAME section, the instruction for what to put in /etc/hostname is ambiguous. Saying 'the hostname should be set' implies a variable. The "Installation Guide" wiki page is much clearer: "Write your hostname to /etc/hostname."

2) In the LOCALIZATION section, /etc/locale-gen is referenced instead of /etc/locale.gen

Reason for closing:  Fixed
Additional comments about closing:  clarified the hostname business in svn, the other issues were already fixed. sorry for taking long in dealing with this.

Argh. How come I never search for the right term when looking for a duplicate? Carry on.

Uggh, closed as wrong dupe, but this is already fixed in git.

I think the hostname business is self-explanatory if you read the manpage for it.

Good job!

"I think the hostname business is self-explanatory if you read the manpage for it."

I scanned the hostname manpage at the time and didn't notice anything about the file.

Nevertheless, why favor a longer and ambiguous instruction over a clear and concise one?

In the BOOTLOADER section, the configuration file for syslinux is not /boot/syslinux/syslinux.conf but /boot/syslinux/syslinux.cfg or /boot/syslinux/extlinux.conf (see the wiki page).

From hostname(5):

"[/etc/hostname] should contain a single newline-terminated host name string"

Suggestions welcome on how to make that more clear and concise.

You could probably save a lot of time just telling people to f*** off, but I suppose that wouldn't be as enjoyable for you.

Yup. This is a completely sane response to a legitimate request. Also a great way to encourage me to close this as wontfix.

I suggested that *a particular statement from archlinux(7)* is ambiguous. You quote *something from a different manpage* and sarcastically suggest I try to make it more clear. And I'm the unreasonable one?

If you think my problem with the statement in archlinux(7) is absurd, pedantic, or anal, that's perfectly acceptable to me. If you close it as wontfix, that's no skin off my back. But don't quote an entirely different sentence from an entirely different manpage and suggest that's what I was talking about.

If you'd like to continue this pendatry, submit a git formatted patch to arch-projects@archlinux.org with what you think is a shorter and less ambiguous directive. Make sure to prefix the subject with [initscripts]. I'm done here.
