In order to open html links in pdf files, community/mupdf uses 2 mechanisms: (i) $BROWSER env. var or (ii) xdg-open which is a part of extra/xdg-utils. Usually $BROWSER is not set up (at least in xfce4 and e17), and the user does not know that xdg-utils is needed.

Therefore, mupdf will either fail or crash when trying to open hyperlinks (http://bugs.ghostscript.com/show_bug.cgi?id=693078). Is it possible to modify mupdf's PKGBUILD and add an optdepends=('xdg-utils') entry? Also, it would be nice to have an post_install() or post_upgrade() warning along the lines:

To open HTML links in pdf files, please set BROWSER
to your preferred web browser.

E.g. the post_install() hook will become:
post_install() {
update-desktop-database -q
cat << EOF
To open HTML links in pdf files, please set BROWSER
to your preferred web browser.
EOF
}

Thanks.
