Description:

I have a PC (ASUS P5Q, 4 GB RAM, Intel 8500 Core 2 Duo) with this TV tuner card in (AF9013/AF9015 chipsets) which worked perfectly with Kaffeine until the kernel 3.3.1 update (the first of the 3.3 series released for Arch). Kaffeine reported device not found, despite all the modules and firmware being correctly installed. The fix was to downgrade back to 3.2.13 kernel.

After Googling around, I found that the drivers for the chipsets used had been rewritten, so assumed some issue with that. I tested each 3.3-series kernel released, all failed the same way. I then discovered that there were known issues with USB-based DVB cards, and there were lots of fixes and updates in the 3.4 kernel, so eagerly awaited that.

I have tested each kernel release up to 3.4.4-2, all with the same result. The details below were for 3.4.2-2, when I originally logged a problem on the Arch wiki.

To verify this was an Arch issue, and not a kernel/Kaffeine problem, I downloaded the latest Sabayon DVD image, the only other KDE-based distribution with a 3.4 kernel that I could find. Booted that up, and installed the Kaffeine package: works perfectly.

For reference, here's the relevant details of the system:

From this you can see that the modules are all correctly loaded and linked, and the tuner card is initialised and works as far as the kernel can tell.

I also tried installing Me-TV, but that also has issues: the channel scan wizard just sits there without doing anything visible, and produces no results.

Is this still a problem with 3.6.2?

Unfortunately, due to a change in personal circumstances, I can't test this at the moment, and won't be able to do so for some time.

Well, 'wrong' is a bit blunt, but it was correct at the time of writing, as far as the local repository here in Australia was concerned. 3.6.2 didn't arrive until this morning.

However, although I cannot test the Winfast card under 3.6.2, the dVico Nano that I have still misbehaves, as it also did after 3.2. Kaffeine locks up when changing channels.

I've just tested this again with the latest 3.6.7 kernel, and Kaffeine still reports 'device not found', but still works okay with the LTS kernel.

I did a clean install of the PC last week, and after updating to kernel 3.6.9 and ensuring the firmware was up to date, Kaffeine now works happily with this card.

This job can be closed as far as I'm concerned.

Cheers,
Effrafax.
