cp /etc/john.conf /usr/share/john.local.conf?

Still a bug but this does not seem critical.

I thought someone made a mistake in the code. Problem solved after:
touch /usr/share/john/john.local.conf

I do not know who invented it...

The local.conf was introduced with jumbo-6 so people make their local changes there and don't have to merge their old and the new config all the time. The .install also just touches the file at /etc. Anyway thanks for reporting fixed with package 1.7.9-5. Next time if there's a problem with a package from community please report it there https://bugs.archlinux.org/index.php?project=5 because TUs don't have rights at this tracker for packages from core/extra/other issues.
