The absence of working fsck for btrfs should not be a problem for a live medium. I would like to have btrfs support in building archiso live media. Patch is attached.

btrfs-progs is not part of {base} group, but it can be added as optional.

how better is btrfs for this kind of dm-snapshot scheme? (space usage of COW images, ...)

The compressed image is slightly bigger than the ext4 one, even in mixed mode. However inside the live system you can remount the filesystems with compress support:

mount -o remount,compress /

This writes files compressed to the cow image, saving RAM size. This is very useful when installing packages or writing file inside live system with limited RAM.

If you like I will provide a patch for archiso initramfs hook to remount automatically.

Do not worry about that, I have in my TODO, to pass mount options via aitab and via bootparam ;)
