I see that both Debian and Gentoo doesn't provide desktop file. To be honest, I will do the same thing; desktop file for command-line application sounds crazy.

It is actually quite handy. Mplayer works fine when you execute it eg by doubleclicking on a file in your fancy gui filemanager, .desktop files are also required for propper mime handeling in modern de's
