Apparently, the print_help method of the OptionParser class from the optparse module is unable to cope when stdout is a binary stream. After all, it's writing a text string. So we need to call sys.stdout.detach() after optparse has done its thing. Patch is attached. I'm not really sure whose bug this is, anyway. Looks upstream to me, but you patched the package. Steps to reproduce: markdown_py --help |
