says that there are

usr/include/fftw3.f
usr/include/fftw3.h

both in the pkg. what do you mean "manually compile and install fftw"?

for reference see also here: http://www.novell.com/products/linuxpackages/professional/fftw3-devel.html

oh allright i see what the problem is. fftw3 is incompatible to fftw2. they renamed the headers. but i need fftw2 to run with certain apps.

i guess it would be better if the package was named fftw3 or something, since fftw2 is still in use and provides the missing fftw.h. both packages could be installed in parallel.

[damir@Asteraceae ~]$ locate fftw3.h
/usr/include/fftw3.h

[damir@Asteraceae ~]$ pacman -Qo /usr/include/fftw3.h
/usr/include/fftw3.h is owned by fftw3 3.0.1-1

if you are searching for the fftw.h, this is part of fftw2 pkg that should be in AUR.

http://aur.archlinux.org/packages/fftw2/fftw2/

note that if your project needs fftw.h, then it needs fftw2 and not fftw3 (they are not compatible in their API's)

if there is a broad need for fftw2 for some other packages, i can add it to [extra]

ok, sorry for wasting your time.

wait, i'm not done.

after checking out the aur a bit i found out that its inconvenient in several ways. this is no better than just acquiring the 2 package from the fftw page and building it myself.

seriously, that sucks. i know that there are better distributions for audio around but i want to stick with arch. i'm a versatile person. i use linux for all kind of stuff, not only to make music. but you can't make it that hard for people like me, can you?
Comment by Leonard Ritter (paniq) - Monday, 18 July 2005, 19:29 GMT
i have to add that i havent found a single arch package that requires fftw2. but e.g. rezound requires it. pd has support for it. other applications like supercollider do. none of those are in the repository. basically, if i'm about to do anything with audio, i'm kinda on my own with arch.
Comment by Damir Perisa (damir.perisa) - Monday, 18 July 2005, 20:00 GMT
please email me - we can discuss this matters directly. it is not that hard, if you know how. i'll explain it to you if you want. basically, you can use ABS for custom or AUR pkgs. i'm also interested in audio/music editing but have not much experience with it except a little bit ardour experience in recording. rezound i never tried to build and supercollider i don't know.

the difficulty about this kind of software is that these projects are not that active like the projects in programming or server-administration. the people doing music do not play too much with the new-features and therefore the projects slowly become outdated (e.g. use old API and old versions of libs). this is my personal opinion.

this bug i want to close because the fftw3.{f.h} are on the right place.

we can discuss the fftw2 pkg in another thread/email/forum but not here, ok?

i have a better idea. i will change this bug to a wish for fftw2 in [extra]. basically because this is the background it is based on, right? ;-)

what reasons are there to provide fftw2 officially? (what software needs it?)

- rezound
- ?

fftw2 -> [extra] ( bug 2969 ):
--------------------------------------------------------------
the fftw2 package in AUR has some problems:

- it is not .la slayed
- it is not compiled to contain single + double precission libs
- it does not support gcc-fortran (it is not gcc4 compatible for building
it)
- it contains replaces=('fftw') what is a little bit wrong, becasue they
can co-exist (the one is 2.x.y and the other 3.x.y)

because of  bug 2969 , there is need to have it in [extra] and as maintainer
of fftw (the 3.x.y) i decided to bring the one from AUR up to date and
put it in extra.

i will put it to [testing] now. please make sure to test it against/with
packages that would need it. you have time till next wednesday
(26.10.2005) evening (GMT+1) for any testing and trouble finding. then i
will move it to [extra]. then it should be also removed from the AUR.

feedback and suggestions are always welcome!
greetings,
Damir
