when i run aplay with latest alsa, i get this error and no sound plays.

aplay /opt/kde/share/sounds/KDE_Startup.wav
ALSA lib pcm_direct.c:882:(snd_pcm_direct_initialize_poll_fd) unable to open timer 'hw:CLASS=3,SCLASS=0,CARD=0,DEV=0,SUBDEV=0'
ALSA lib pcm_dmix.c:869:(snd_pcm_dmix_open) unable to initialize poll_fd
aplay: main:533: audio open error: No such file or directory

i've tried old versions 0.60-3 and 0.58-5 and alsa works fine, (but as everyone knows, in 0.60-3, there are some cdrom device symlinking issues, so i dont want to use it)
