mplayer -vo vdpau says:
Failed to open VDPAU backend libvdpau_nvidia.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
[vdpau] Error when calling vdp_device_create_x11: 1
Error opening/initializing the selected video_out (-vo) device.

Nouveau doesn't support vdpau, so that error is normal. As for your crash: probably a bug in the nouveau driver. We've taken a git snapshot somewhere in february, there's several commits in git after that and the most recent git commit could be the fix for your bug.
