Details

Trying to start up blender or other programs that use ffmpeg (such as ffmpeg2theora) crash unless I set up the following symlinks:

/usr/lib/libx264.so.118 -> libx264.so.120
/usr/lib/libvpx.so.0 -> libvpx.so.1

I'm guessing ffmpeg for x86_64 20120317-1 was built with the older library.

it works fine for me and these were already set up
/usr/lib/libx264.so -> libx264.so.120
and

lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 15 Feb 5 07:46 /usr/lib/libvpx.so.1 -> libvpx.so.1.0.0

Please remove the broken symlinks and reinstall ffmpeg.
