Assigning to Judd because I don't know how this is techically possible.

well this is what I have done at 4:18am, 3rd July 2005:

[root@vivi kcy29581]# pacman -Syu
:: Synchronizing package databases...
:: current is up to date
:: extra is up to date
:: community is up to date
[root@vivi kcy29581]# pacman -S smeg
smeg: not found in sync db

As you can see, extra is apparenly ok, yet no smeg... Any other info you require from me?

I have also just noticed that pyxdg isn't found either... Maybe I need to reset something?

Your mirror probably hasn't caught up yet. Wait a while, or change your mirrors in /etc/pacman.conf (or /etc/pacman.d/*)

aha, mirrors. If that's the problem all would be solved quickly! I'm going to read up but could you direct me to a list of available mirrors? Thanks

i just ran netselect and it screwed up my syncing... I get failures while trying to sync the repos. Guess I won't trust a script again

You can change the selection order of the mirrors by editing the files in /etc/pacman.d/

Pick one that is geographically close to you and you should be fine. If you notice the mirror still hasn't updated after a day or two, let me know and I'll remove it.
