You can install, boot & operate a box without net-tools but in order for anything to work wrt host-only or bridged networking you need net-tools Additional info: * package version(s) * config and/or log files etc. Steps to reproduce: Uinstall net-tools (because it's not a dependency of virtualbox). Boot a virtualbox guest with host-only networking on eth1. Watch your host system not have a route/ip for vboxnet0 & no way to communicate with the vm on that host-only network. Now install net-tools & reboot & try again. It'll work this time. |
