Description:
Before the switch from ifconfig to ip for TCP/IP configuration we had the tool mii-tool directly usable after core or net installations.
Currently we have no tool to show/config ethernet link/negotiation settings if network problems occured.
mii-tool = package core/net-tools - no group
ethtool = package extra/ethtool - no group

ip link is no replacement for one of this tools.

So i would like to get ethtool as part of base group. ethtool is somewhat modern as mii-tool, which seems to have problems with some newer ethernet devices/environments.

Thanks...

What about the core repo instead? Is it really needed in base? Neither iproute2 which replaced net-tools is in base..

base or core group (or no group): my intention is to get it on the installer/live iso. Older iso generation put all base group packages onto the iso, so ethtool were not be included cause it don't belong to any group.

I don't know the criteria for packages to get onto the iso with the new live cd structure…
Cause you need ethtool mostly <g> when you have network problems, so the later installation via pacman is often not possible.

Then you could add a request to include it in archiso as well.

It makes sense having it in core imo, despite net-tools being there. The only disadvantage is that it will need signoffs. Since there are no official isos of the whole core repo nowadays size of the repo shouldnt be much of a problem.

If this [ethtool] is added to {base} will be automatically added to the live-enviroment.

For now, I will add it manually if this is not moved to {base}. OK?

That's fine, Gerardo. Thanks.
