I tried to isolate the cause of this bug by bisecting on the many options to the vlc configuration. However I could not build vlc using the default Archlinux configuration; configure complained that live-media was out of date (it was looking for the Dec 2011 version or newer) even though our live-media IS the newest of Feb 2012 (I had the latest live-media installed from the Archlinux repository). I recompiled live-media, same version as the binary repository, same PKGBUILD, and then vlc compiled without error. Now vlc plays the iso files. :<

The "bug" seems to be that live-media needed to be recompiled, at least on my system. I'm running the standard glibc from Arch binary repo. My gcc-libs was locally compiled with non-standard CFLAGS (arch=native) but no other changes.

Haven't had time to look into it, but I might have the same problem when streaming:
vlc *.m3u
