After upgrading to Openssh 4.1p1-1 I began experiencing a 6-8 seconds delay when connecting to systems inside the firewall.

The delay is coming from DNS trying to do a reverse lookup (which is the default "UseDNS yes"). But there there is no internal DNS, so the login has to wait for a timeout.

The below link has a dialog on the issue.
http://kerneltrap.org/mailarchive/11/message/37814/thread

I tested the -u0 option in conjunction with "UseDNS yes", and I no longer see any delay when establishing new ssh connections to my internal or external systems.

If it's appropiate, Please consider adding the -u0 to the /etc/rc.d/sshd startup script.

thanks

I think using -u0 by default may upset some users. Having hostnames in the utmp can be handy for many.

You could just change "UseDNS" to No in /etc/ssh/sshd_config, rather than bother with -u0.
