Description:
Without the libhunspell-1.3.a file gcc cannot link to the C++ library.

Many of our packages link against it.

What exact linkage procedure does not work for you? Are you trying to link hunspell statically?

Lots of applications work completely fine without the static libraries. Static linking is bad, so we don't compile such libraries unless it's really needed for something. Broken software that hard-links to .a files instead of resolving the shared library through linker usage is not a reason to include static libraries.
