A possible workaround is to create / modify the key mapping like this :
create a xmodmap file (~/.Xmodmap) with the following lines added/replaced :
keycode 63 = KP_Multiply
keycode 106 = KP_Divide
then apply the modifications with xmodmap <modmap file>
