If I can't see a file when it first opens up, I can see it sometimes at a different zoom level.
Just to give a random example from google, this file:
http://ntl.bts.gov/lib/20000/20800/20828/PB98153612.pdf
If I get this, it opens to a gray screen. If I zoom out a few times it shows up at 48.2% zoom. Weirdly enough, it only seems to show up between 48.1-48.3%.
If I get this one though, the first page appears correctly at any zoom level that I try, but the second page wants me to zoom to between 45-69% before it'll show me something other than the background gray.

The pdf opens fine with okular.
Could you report this upstream?

*poppler-0.18.3-2-x86_64
with "PB98153612.pdf" i can't see anything if zoom is less than 173% and more than 48,2%
with "kuo_99.pdf" i see only the first page normally
subsequent pages only at zoom above 140% or less than 69,4%
with evince or other no problem !
Ubuntu 11.10 (with poppler 0.16.7-2ubuntu2) doesn't have this bug.
