DetailsDescription:
I've experienced the same problem on Ubuntu, so it's probably an upstream bug, but here's the story: Latest KDE working like a charm on Arch on a Lenovo SL510 notebook. Then I plug in a new monitor (over VGA/DSub) KDE notifies me, offers to start the Display config utility. Everything works great. I configure the new display to be the primary. Then I unplug the display and reboot. After logging in I'm greeted with an empty screen only with the background. I can start applications via ALT+F2 but they don't show up. I can ALT+TAB and see the programs running but even after selecting one and releasing the alt-tab keys only the background is visible, adding a panel is possible (KDE doesn't crash like it did on ubuntu), but it doesn't show. Just after bringing up the Activities panel and frantically clicking around on the Desktop and Desktop Icons activities makes things come back to life. Additional info: Everything is up to date as of 2011-12-30. Steps to reproduce: Install Arch, KDE, X, drivers, enable desktop effects, plug in a secondary monitor, plug it out, restart the system. |

Anyway, try to remove your /var/tmp/kde-* and to move ~/.kde4/ somewhere else. Or try with a new user.
I've reported it upstream, here's the bugzilla link: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=291412
