Looks like the problem is with libgsf & libgsf-gnome. I've downgraded both packages (libgsf from 1.12.0-1 to 1.11.1-2, libgsf-gnome from 1.12.0.1 to 1.11.1-1) and saving to *.xls works like a charm.
