Hi,
I have an old laptop over here running several times XP before.
Now I wanted to rescue this poor computer from Windows and install a clean archlinux-i686 to it.
The installation was successful and didn't cause any problems.

Then I installed the default packages which I usually install:
gnome
gnome-extra
xorg-server
xf86-video-ati
...

Latest files, default configs...

Finally coming to the issue:
When I start gdm I get a black screen with the mouse cursor.
I can move the mouse cursor but I don't manage it to get rid of this black screen.
I can't find any errors in the xorg logs and the gdm logs aren't quite helpful.

I often have issues with older (2003) laptops and linux, don't know why.

What causes this damn black screen?

Regards,
