since the last upgrade, the apple.com trailers don't play anymore with the mplayer-plugin. I get a black rectangle inside the video window saying "no picture". It used to work fairly well.

Eugenia, what was upgraded in your "last upgrade"? On a fully up-to-date system, I can play the apple trailers just fine using mplayer-plugin.

That's what you get when you install VLC, VLC ships with a mozilla plugin that "supports" Quicktime movies, while it doesn't. Remove the vlc plugins from /opt/mozilla-plugins and mplayer-plugin should pick up the quicktime movies again. Until I have found out how to get rid of the quicktime registration in VLC, I have no other workaround for you than this solution.

Is it possible to make sure that the Arch Linux's version of VLC does not install the browser plugins? Because, obviously, they aren't very good. ;)

I prefer to have Xine, Totem, mplayer and VLC installed on my system for different reasons. Each one has its goods and bads...

this works fine for me..

does anyone still have issues with this??

Works for me after the VLC and totem mozilla plugins are removed. mplayer-plugin works much better.

Yes, removing the VLC crappy plugin, it works. I would like to suggest Arch Linux to package Totem and VLC without their mozilla plugin, and only allow the mplayer-plugin to play that role in the system. I think most people would prefer that, as it works better.

is the vlc plugin removed ?
Comment by Eugenia Loli-Queru (Eugenia) - Monday, 31 October 2005, 23:42 GMT
That's what I said, it is removed. And I asked for Arch Linux to remove the Totem and VLC plugins from their packages and only allow the mplayer plugin for this work. The other two plugins are just not ready yet so they should not be deployed as part of the main totem/vlc packages.

With the latest version of mplayer-plugin I am able to play Apple trailers again, BUT:
1. The sound is terrible now. It stops and starts all the time while video is smooth.
2. I can't SAVE any of the clips anymore. This used to work.

probably a problem with mplayer-plugin itself once again. nothing we can fix.

not the fault of our packaging. mplayer-plugin is not bugfree after all and intends to introduce new ones occasionally.
