Probably gnome-settings-daemon reverts this every few minutes to whatever you defined in GNOME and doesn't receive notification of changes you do through xset. Check system settings -> keyboard for enabled repeat and enable it there.

I think it is correctly set in gnome-control-center. I used to enter there to re-enable auto-repeat, until someone suggested the "xset r" way, much faster.

When I commented this in arch-general some weeks ago, some more people said that they have the same problem.

Is this still a problem?

Always worked for me.

It is still a problem. I have had to run xset r again 30 seconds ago.

And I keep having no clue about this. I don't tweak very much my systems. I have another seven PCs running arch, and the problem only happens in the one I use to work. Right now I'm running pidgin, gnote, vmware workstation 7.1.5 and chromium.

The problem is gone, but I can't tell what made it dissapear, sorry.

Maybe the upgrade of libreoffice, or VMware workstation 8 replacing 7.1.5. These two are the programs I use most.

I nobody else is experiencing this problem, the I think this can be closed.
