Details

Description:

fetchnews returns error "no such user: 9"
slrn reports similar when connecting to localhost. [port 119 is open]

Additional info:
* package version(s)

leafnode-1.11.8-3

* config and/or log files etc.

The same config I have been using for x years.

Steps to reproduce:

It happens all the time and was resolved by downloading leafnode source code from sourceforge and compiling it myself.

$ ./configure --sbindir=/usr/sbin --bindir=/usr/bin
$ make
# make install

The error is telling you that the user with UID 9 doesn't exist. The problem is the install scriptlet only checks for (and if necessary, creates) this user on install but not upgrade.

Install the package from community and run these commands as root:

groupadd -g 13 -r news
useradd -u 9 -r -m -g news news
