Description:
I'm experiencing random GPFs since a few days. Roughly since updating to Gnome 3.2
X will disappear and only the kernel log will be shown. Switching to another TTY and back to TTY7 will bring X back.

Have you tried running memtest?
Comment by Philip Abernethy (Chais) - Thursday, 17 November 2011, 12:12 GMT
Sorry it took me so long to answer. As the PC I'm experiencing this on is my office PC, I can't just run a memtest for half an hour.
Had another occurrence today. With kernel 3.1 by now. So I ran a memtest afterwards but didn't find anything.
Unfortunately the trace seems to be maimed, because I had to hard reset the PC.
Comment by Hubert Kario (tomato) - Thursday, 17 November 2011, 12:36 GMT
I would still suggest running memtest, best to leave it for a night.

Other way to capture trace is using netconsole: http://www.kernel.org/doc/Documentation/networking/netconsole.txt

It may be related to your hardware configuration, add "lspci -vvv" output and model of your mainboard if possible.

This should contain all the hardware info. How should running a memtest over night find more than running it once? I've had it complete one pass.
Comment by Hubert Kario (tomato) - Thursday, 17 November 2011, 15:14 GMT
> How should running a memtest over night find more than running it once? I've had it complete one pass.

Memory sometimes only returns wrong data on very specific values (there's randomization of pattern in memtest) and it may be temperature dependant (it returns erroneous data when hot).
Also, I'd say that full test of 4GB of memory in 30min on that platform is suspiciously fast, you sure it did full pass of the top progress bar, not just the lower one?
Comment by Philip Abernethy (Chais) - Thursday, 17 November 2011, 15:23 GMT
Definitely the upper one. The first few passes of the lower one only take a couple of seconds. I don't think Memtest 86+ would betray me on this. But OK, I'll leave the memtest running over night.
Comment by Philip Abernethy (Chais) - Friday, 18 November 2011, 08:36 GMT
Left it running over night and here's what's been found:
^Test^Pass^Failing Address ^Good ^Bad ^Err-Bits^Count^Chan^

So I guess the ticket can be closed as it's quite obviously the RAM's fault.

EDIT: I hoped to have wiki formatting here :/
