It would be nice to know what the colors around a checkbox mean. Some kind of key at the bottom of the package list page would be nice.

Should be a feature request. Users cannot modify bugs, even if they submit them. Someone change it to "feature request" please.
I thought I had selected that dropdown option for "feature", but maybe the mental force was not strong enough to drive the hand/mouse this time.

Would putting a color key in the AUR guidelines (which is the closest thing we've currently got to documentation) suffice?
How about a small "key" link that pops up a very small key window?
Or would just putting it at the bottom of the page be best?

I would think a small key at the bottom of the package page would be the best. Maybe in a single line in small text across the bottom. With a small box of the color to the left of it.
[ ] - Definition1, [ ] - Definition2, etc..
With the [ ] filled in with color. Could be fairly discreet if placed at the bottom between the more and less buttons.

I attached a patch and a screenshot of what it does.
It looks clear, simple, yet non-intrusive, to me, though the bright specks of color make it stick out more than you'd think.

I'm not a UI guy :P

Let me know what you think, before I go comitting it.

Seems very reasonable to me. Small and relatively unobtrusive.
Nice touch just coloring the first letter too. :D
