However, the connection didn't work.
I downgraded net-tools to the previous version (1.60-18), deleted my dummy hostname script and it's working again.

net-tools is deprecated
Installing inetutils and iproute2 make all errors related to hostname go away in wicd.log, but the connection still does not work.
