The hard drive is a Western Digital 750GB USB 3.0 My Passport and my Hewlet Packard DM1-2160LA (I think) has only USB 2 ports.

Additional info:
* package version(s): Kernel is linux 3.0.4-1, gnome-shell is 3.2.0-1, same as nautilus. Dbus is 1.4.14-1.
* Log: It does bring me to a black screen when the panic ocurrs. I'll try to edit and upload a picture of the error.

Didnt this happen before? What upgrade caused this?
Comment by Alexander F. Rødseth (xyproto) - Monday, 03 October 2011, 17:39 GMT
What does dmesg say, what's in /var/log/Xorg.0.log and Xorg.0.log.old?

@jelly: I started to notice the bug after Gnome upgrade, but I'm not sure if another package upgraded caused this.

@trontonic: I'll attach those files in the post.

The Xorg logs are full of these messages:
[ 16463.785] (II) RADEON(0): radeon_dri2_schedule_flip:619 fevent[0x1214010]
[ 16463.811] (II) RADEON(0): radeon_dri2_flip_event_handler:981 fevent[0x1214010] width 1366 pitch 5632 (/4 1408)

Xorg.0.log.old ends with "[ 16466.773 ] (II) R" and seems like it has been stopped while writing.

Could this be a Radeon issue? Have you tried upgrading/downgrading your drivers, or switching to the nonfree catalyst drivers, just to check?

dmesg does not mention any usb problems, as far as I can see.

Thanks for attaching the logs.

@trontonic: I've read that if I install fglrx instead of xf86-video-ati, Gnome-shell wouldn't be able to work normally. Where do I find a version of xf86-video-ati, prior to 6.14.2-1 so I'm able to downgrade?

Today the bug didn't happen. The kernel panic didn't presented. The only thing I did in my USB drive was to delete my MP3 and FLAC collection as I have it duplicated in another of my drives. I'm quite confused. I don't know if it's correct to leave the bug open as it may happen again. As soon as it happens (if it does, I will write about it in the bug or in another one. Thank you for the attention given to it.

If the panic happens and you can "catch it" with dmesg, it would be helpful in pinpointing the problem. Please reopen the bug if that happens. Thanks.

The issue is reproducible for me also. It doesn't reproduces consistently. But I had 2 kernel panics for the last 2 days. They happened when I tried to eject my harddrive using the new Removable Deviced icon on the bottom panel in gnome-shell.

Attached is my dmesg output, part of /var/log/everything.log and the kernel panic call trace, which I manually copied from the screen so it may have inaccuracies.

Nice catch! It's a proper bug allright. Sergio, did you also use ntfs-3g?
Comment by Sergio Liberman Bronfman (sergiolib) - Tuesday, 11 October 2011, 01:54 GMT
@trontonic Yes I did, and sorry for the late response. I've started school now and I've been with a lot of work.

Thanks. This could perhaps be related to ntfs-3g, then.

These type of errors sometimes occurs when you use ntfs formatted usb drives under windows, and under linux. A well working usb drive (on Windows side) using ntfs cause kernel panic on linux boxes. Seems windows don't repair minor errors on some sectors that crash the ntfs drive on linux... as random event...
