Description:

The R shared libraries are not currently included as part of ldconfig. An entry for R should be placed in /etc/ld.so.conf.d that includes the R library path /usr/lib/R/lib.

What needs these libraries apart from R?

Any tool that links against R. For example, littler in AUR (http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=52482&detail=1) is what prompted me to open this bug.
