modplug has better quality and stability than mikmod and is more configurable. Packages are in AUR.
AFAIK most distributions use mikmod, but I use modplug for some months now and am way more content with it than with mikmod. mikmod gave me really weird sounds with some MOD files and the XMMS plugin sometimes crashed, whereas with modplug it never does anything like that. Might be worth a try so Arch excels here one more time.
If more research if required I can take on it.

Additional comments about closing:  The bmp part hasn't been implemented, as I can't find the bmp plugin anymore. The plugin is gone from gentoo also, so I guess it is no longer available.

Leslie.. would xmms and other programs using mikimod break until they're recompiled against modplug?

Maybe I should clarify this issue a bit. It's just about the default module playing plugin used in XMMS.

Yes, libmodplug should be the default (for both XMMS and Beep Media Player).
