DetailsA better translation/internationalization mechanism is needed.
I have written an interactive tranlation tool that allows very rapid and efficient translation to take place, and when new strings need to be translated, only asks about those. I have also restructured the entire lang/ directory to be more easily maintainable, and keep different languages seperate from one another. This new structure is *.inc's are still in lang/, but individual languages are in subdirectories like lang/[two-letter-abbrv], and are included from those in lang/ . translation_tool is basically just a hacked up genpopo, to provide for languages other than English, and interactive prompting. genpopo creates the default English "translations" of everything, as well as parsing for new translatable strings, though translation_tool does that too, but only for whatever language is being translated for. If these changes are implemented, the translation process will be something like this: - Translator does an svn co on just the web directory - Translator runs utils/genpopo, then utils/translation_tool - Translator tars up langs/ and sends it to us - We open it up and make a sane merge with the AUR (which should be pretty easy with the new directory structure) - We add the language to the $SUPPORTED_LANGS array That's it, translation done! As the AUR develops, and more translatable strings are added, and there are just too damned many things blinking, we contact the translator and ask them to repeat the above process. When they run translation_tool this time, they will only be prompted for new strings. |

genpopo
Drop them in utils/, then do: rm lang/*inc; utils/genpopo
Everything *should* still work, as the new system is a drop in replacement for the existing.
I'd like to get an understanding of what the migration path would be so we can start using it!
Hey how's this sound, I'll bring the beta server up to par with the svn repo today, so we can test the emailing subsystems and other fixes before they go live. And although it's not in the subversion yet, I'll apply the new translation stuff so we can give that a go too.
