Description:
In KDE 4.7.1 the fake solid nm-0.9 backend was added, it allows kdelibs to be connection-aware. It seems that kdelibs can't use the nm-0.9 backend from kdeplasma-applets-networkmanagement for this due to binary compatibility issues, see http://lamarque-lvs.blogspot.com/2011/09/common-errors-when-migrating-to-or.html

I also read that (after I built the packages), but the plasmoid works fine on my laptop. What's broke?

The plasmoid works fine, but solid reports that the network is offline:

> LC_ALL=C solid-network query status
solid-network(3693)/kdecore (KSycoca) KSycocaPrivate::openDatabase: Trying to open ksycoca from "/var/tmp/kdecache-antonioU6brYi/ksycoca4"
solid-network(3693)/Solid (NetworkManager) NMNetworkManagerNm09Private::NMNetworkManagerNm09Private: org.freedesktop.NetworkManager
solid-network(3693)/Solid (NetworkManager) NMNetworkManagerNm09::NMNetworkManagerNm09: Device list
solid-network(3693)/Solid (NetworkManager) NMNetworkManagerNm09::NMNetworkManagerNm09: "/org/freedesktop/NetworkManager/Devices/0"
solid-network(3693)/Solid (NetworkManager) NMNetworkManagerNm09::NMNetworkManagerNm09: Active connections:
solid-network(3693)/Solid (NetworkManager) NMNetworkManagerNm09::NMNetworkManagerNm09: "/org/freedesktop/NetworkManager/ActiveConnection/0"
networking: is not enabled

So applications that depend on this functionality to check network availability don't work properly
