Dear fincan,
Which old iso do you use to get around this problem? After 2011.08.19 iso I've also tried with the 2011.08.18-core-i686 but got the same problem with it.

gesti

PS: same thing with 2011.08.15 iso...

To get around this problem, you can use the ISO from 2010.05. Which you can download from here: ftp://linuxfreedom.com/archlinux/download.html

Is there a workaround or fix for this issue? The problem with going back to an install ISO that uses kernel26 is that I then don't have any network drivers to be able to use for the installation.

I guess something wrong with dm-raid in such kernel. Try one of the latest isos that have the most recent kernel in [core]

I upgraded a functionnal Arch on a FakeRAID Intel, and got the same bug. I tried to reinstall from the lastest official (2011.08.19) and latest testing (2012.01.25) ISO releases and all have the same problems. I can't use my Arch anymore... :'(

Same thing here, tested with latest official and testing ISOs (from 2012.01.01 to 2012.01.26).

Have been trying latest releng ISOs each week, same problem here. Is there anything I can do?

I reinstalled using mdadm, it works. In the 2012.01.25 iso, the mdadm partitions are not listed in the installer, but they are in 2012.01.26. Partitions are /dev/md128p?, they are presented right after ISO boot, there is nothing special to do.
You have to add your filesystem module manually in mkinitcpio.conf (e.g. ext4), as well as your raid module (e.g. raid0). I added /sbin/mdadm in the binairies for convenience, if ever I couldn't boot. Honestly, I had to reboot 4 times before figuring out how to configure it. I used syslinux as bootloader, because it is raid aware. Also, take care of the /etc/mdadm.conf. You have to generate it manually:
mdadm --examine --scan > /mnt/etc/mdadm.conf
before generating the initcpio. https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/RAID has good infos.
The problem is, during all my manipulations, I set the partition table to GPT, so my Windows don't boot anymore as GPT without UEFI is not supported.

1) Though mdadm (soft raid) works, it makes dual-boot Windows impossible.
2) The bug is about FakeRAID, not "soft" RAID.

Vertio, about 1), you are mistaken. Since some months ago, mdadm recognizes FakeRAID. In fact, I have myself Fedora16 and Win7 installed on a FakeRAID5 where F16 uses mdadm.

BTW this seems to be a duplicate of https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/20333.

According to Neil Brown:
No. Only Intel Matrix Storage Manager (IMSM) aka 'isw', and some support for
DDF.

mdadm does not support other RAID metadata formats - you still need to use
dmraid for those.

In the end, it seems no solution for install to fakeRAID was ever found. Whether by mdadm, dmraid, or by any other means, this should have some way of being done.
Requesting reopen not necessarily to fix dmraid, but resolve the issue of installing arch on fakeRAID systems.

This *does* work.

If you have problems, ask on the forums for support or refer to the wiki. If there are specific bugs to be addressed, open a bug report.
