It seems that it is also enough to run VLC (I'm not sure it is needed) and wait for the screen to lock. I guess it could be the combination of the media player and the screen saver. Maybe also a Java application in the background does something to provide this bug, but gnome-shell is the process which hangs then and has the 80-100 percent cpu usage.

Started now to hang while using VLC, no screensaver was in use! Firefox and Opera is running.

This on a quad core cpu with 6G memory.

There are many upstream bug reports concerning high cpu usage, can you check the Gnome bugtracker for a report matching your problem?
Also, check these:
Fedora #706971 "CPU is at 100% when playing movie" https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=706971
Gnome #640314 "High CPU usage when playing videos" https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=640314

The problem seems now to has to do with playing movies, but I hardly can say how much the bugs are matching. The problem occurs after a while of playing movies, maybe a half hour till hour. It has occured already with totem and vlc. Until it occurs everything is fine. Is it there, keyboard and mouse input is hanging. I guess the second reported bug (gnome.org) matches better than the first one.

How can I provide additional information about this bug?

only upstream. we don't deal with bugs in software on this bugtracker, only packaging bugs.

For what i see, i guess your video card is not capable to use vdpau or libva and is using xv or gl, resulting in a very high cpu usage

I'm using the following graphic card:
VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation GT218 [GeForce 210] (rev a2)

Does this card support vdpau or libva?
Comment by Ionut Biru (wonder) - Sunday, 04 September 2011, 14:33 GMT
both, but vlc uses libva and needs explicitly to be enabled from preferences. Also you need to install vdpau-video as well

Still an issue?

I have a similar problem. gnome-shell uses 100% CPU after unlocking the screen. In the morning after unlocking the
screen gnome is pretty much unusable until I restart using F2 and r. It is reproducible and as far is a can tell
began with the latest gnome package updates.

greetings
