http://www.archlinux.org/packages/extra/x86_64/mesa/ lists dri2proto and glproto as dependencies -- AFAIK those packages are necessary for mesa to run correctly. `pacman -S mesa' doesn't install them. They have to be installed manually.

maybe your mirror is out of date. I just added them in 7.11-2

I'm using:
Server = ftp://ftp.tu-chemnitz.de/pub/linux/archlinux/$repo/os/x86_64
Server = http://mirrors.kernel.org/archlinux/$repo/os/$arch
