Is inetutils installed?
Comment by Facundo Costa (facucosta) - Friday, 19 August 2011, 22:40 GMT
no, i never needed it. is it a dependence from now on?

It's the provider of the hostname binary now, which is likely what's missing.

oh, i didn't know about that! thanks a lot for the info, i'll suscribe right now. anyways, installing inetutils doesn't solve the issue.

Which version of inetutils have you installed? inetutils 1.8-4 (currently in [testing]) should help.

after downgrading net-tools the first time I ran "pacman -S net-tools inetutils" which installed inetutils-1.8-4 and net-tools-20110819cvs1 which left the computer just as before (unable to connect to wireless or wired internet) so i downgraded again. is another package, do you know if there's another package or a special configuration needed?

I can confirm this problem, but hostname has nothing to do with it, the problem is in ifconfig. Reinstalling manually only the ifconfig binary from net-tools-1.60-18 fixed the problem.
I don’t know what is the change in ifconfig causing the problem though.

Edit:
In fact this is easy, the output format of ifconfig has *completely* changed, so any tool parsing the output of ifconfig will stop working.

Yeah, bad on wicd for doing so... with wicd fairly dead upstream, this gets a little strange.

Ronald:
The new wicd package seems to work, thanks :-)
