Every time I upgrade to the next VLC release, the "/usr/share/vlc/http/.hosts" file is reset to the default one. I lodged a report to the VLC bug tracker here: http://trac.videolan.org/vlc/ticket/5137

As you can see, the VLC developers are unwilling to move these ".hosts" files to the "/etc/" directory. Their mentality is that packagers should be treating them as configuration files instead. Are you willing to do this?

Configuration files aren't supposed to go into /usr/share.

Then, I should move the following files to the /etc directory, adding them to the backup field?

/usr/share/vlc/http/.hosts
/usr/share/vlc/http/dialogs/.hosts
/usr/share/vlc/lua/http/.hosts
/usr/share/vlc/lua/http/dialogs/.hosts

Sincerely, I don't like this solution.

On a side note, pacman can handle backup files outside of /etc

@jelle: then, could I add them to the backup field, solving this problem?

@Xavion:
I just added the following files to the backup field to prevent that files gets overwritten when/if you reinstall/upgrade VLC package:

/usr/share/vlc/http/.hosts
/usr/share/vlc/http/dialogs/.hosts
/usr/share/vlc/lua/http/.hosts
/usr/share/vlc/lua/http/dialogs/.hosts
