would it not be sane if virtualbox did /etc/rc.d/vboxdrv setup automatically on upgrade?

no. it won't work when upgrading the kernel to a major version.

and what's in that case? running above command manually?

but on the other hand it could be programmed so it does it after reboot automatically... require reboot on upgrade and then do setup, no?
