Detailswould it not be sane if virtualbox did /etc/rc.d/vboxdrv setup automatically on upgrade?

no. it won't work when upgrading the kernel to a major version.

but on the other hand it could be programmed so it does it after reboot automatically... require reboot on upgrade and then do setup, no?
