DetailsActually no collation is set during mysqld startup.
So it start with the default collation that is latin1_swedish_ci, that surely make happy people from sweden but make trouble for the resto the world. It make problems in particoulary when importing data, it loose all accent and special chars. It is easy to solve the problem by adding the followings two lines at the startup script. --default-character-set=utf8 --default-collation=utf8_unicode_ci |

It can be done also at compile time. I this way there is no need to change the startup, so you can change this by the next mysql release
